Kiyosato Shochu Distillery
Lifting the town by getting the best out of its great produce
Opened in 1975, this distillery is operated by the local government of Kiyosato.
At that time, many locals wanted to make a unique specialty from the town’s produce, so the Kiyosato government tried its hand at brewing shochu from local potatoes.
It took four years and one failure after another, but finally the brewers made Japan’s first true potato shochu. They named it Kiyosato. The distillery is constantly evolving, including large-scale rebranding in 2014.

Hokkaido Kiyosato (cask)
So refreshing. Dry with an umami flavor. I enjoy the aftertaste too!
This shochu has the sweetness of potatoes, while also being incredibly refreshing.
It has a totally different aroma, mouthfeel and style from your average potato shochu.
I recommend it on the rocks, with water or with soda.
This shochu is so suited to rich meat dishes that I went and fried some offal to go with it. (laughs)
It's great with meat dishes in general, as well as stews and tempura.
I love how fresh and smooth it is—it goes down so easily!
It has no strong flavors, in a good way—if you haven't had shochu before, this is a good one to start with!
